Digital financial transactions are on a dramatic rise. They offer more security and various conveniences over traditional payment methods.

Opportunity statement: Consumers over the age of 30 are hesitant to use a payment app in the store. They believe there is no significant benefit in using an app over their traditional in-store payment methods, particularly when they also want to collect reward points during the purchase.

RESEARCH

I started with online research and competitive analysis of the three most-used apps in this space. The information gathered was used to craft and iterate multiple rounds of user surveys & user interviews. This process provided the data to better understand the audience and the potential opportunities and difficulties in this space. It also validate and disproved some early assumptions. Hypotesise and write the problem statement.

DEFINE

With affinity mapping and other methods, I synthesized the research data and updated the problem statement. I then created four user personas from my research data to establish empathy for the user's needs and goals. I condensed the four user personas into two and identified the primary tasks and the functions required to complete the tasks. These functions helped to differentiate and define a MVP. A task analysis was developed with a clear entry point and success criteria.

PROTOTYPE

My next step was to explore a site map using a hybrid card sorting survey to understand how users think about specific category groupings and labels. I began quick sketch prototyping while the card sorting survey was ongoing; this helped me visualize the data coming from the sorting study and allowed for rapid iterations on the early wireframes. I then moved into the mid-fi interactive prototype to start user testing sessions and prepared a user testing plan.

VALIDATE

User testing involved in-person and remote moderated test sessions. After four prototype test sessions, I reviewed the data and made the required prototype iterations. I refined the prototype designs from mid-fi to high-fi and continued usability test sessions with four new participants. Based on test results and findings, I continued iterations as required.

Conclusion

The vault app was a challenging project and a joy to work on. The UX journey was not a linear one. At times it was messy & cumbersome with ambiguity. Adhering to a design thinking process and keeping empathy for the user front and center while following the data lead to an objective solution. Sometimes I found myself going back to previous steps to make changes before continuing to the next step. One example was modifying the usability test script after the third and fifth participants.

In the latest round of usability testing, participants asked when the app would be available for download:) Thanks for your interest.
